What style of Music should you write?

It's entirely up to you which way you take a song. REMEMBER: There are no rules in music so don't EVER let anyone tell you anything else.

I've always embraced every genre of music, everything has it's place (even if it is on a late night cheap tv advert), I've tried writing in almost every main genre possible and each style has it's own thing. If you want to be diverse when it comes to music then it does help to learn 2 or 3 instruments.

2-3 Instruments??? But it was hard enough learning the first one! you might say. Well you don't have to master 3 instruments, just expand on the instrument you play now by learning more styles, then take up something simple like the bongos, harmonica or recorder. Any of these small portable instruments are great for taking away on trips and outings.

So lets say that you play metal guitar.... Go and learn some Jazz guitar, buy a cheap harmonica (or an expensive one) and a basic set of bongos.

This combination is a really good one as it allows you to be completely diverse in alot of different ways. It's also very easy to transport a guitar, harmonica and bongos.

If you're young and adventurous then learn as many instruments as possible, but I'd still recommend starting with 3 simple ones.

So what style should you write? I'm probably not going to answer that question directly although I'll list some great ideas below for new genres to try.

  • If you play Metal Guitar then you might like to take up Jazz Guitar
  • If you play classical piano then you might like to learn the harmonica
  • If you play traditional asian music then you might like to learn about modern western music
  • If you are a karaoke singer then you might like to take up a basic instrument to expand your skills.
  • If you are a rapper then you should try listening to acid house and old school techno
  • If you are a beatmaker then try some classical music

Now that you have the idea in your head, get into it and start learning!
